MELBOURNE — Australian actor Guy Pearce has drawn intense public reaction and political scrutiny following a series of social media posts condemning Israel’s military operations and expressing deep disgust over the civilian toll in Gaza.
The star of Memento, L.A. Confidential, and The Hurt Locker shared a statement online reacting to reports of casualties in the Palestinian territory:
“I’ve never been so disgusted by a group of people in my life as I am by Israelis. Every day I witness their utter disregard and disdain for Palestinian life. It is shameful and sets humanity further backwards with every vile act like this.”
Pearce, who has been a vocal supporter of Palestinian human rights and signed on to the Film Workers for Palestine initiative calling on entertainment industry peers to speak out, faced swift pushback from media commentators and advocacy organizations. Critics accused the actor of making sweeping generalizations about Israeli citizens, while others pointed to separate conspiracy-laden posts he had reshared online.
Following the backlash, Pearce issued a formal apology for accidentally sharing unverified content and misinformation, stating that while his support for human rights remains, he recognized the harm of broadcasting inaccurate material. The actor subsequently announced he would be stepping back from social media platforms.
